If you'd like to make a portable sewing station I have the perfect Ikea hack for you. The Ikea Stolthet chopping board is perfect for converting into a sewing station with a lovely customised cover on top that features a pin cushion and pocket. I have a full video over on Youtube detailing the steps but here is a quick recipe:
You will need:
15" x 10" top fabric and wadding
17" x 12" backing fabric
46" of 1/4" wide elastic
If you'd like to use the same fabric I did, you can find the bundle here: Liberty Quilting Cotton Fat Quarter Bundle - Tudor Celebration Purple
for the pocket you will need: 2 1/2" x 4" for the top fabric and wadding, and 3 1/2" x 5" backing fabric.
The pincushion is made from a 4" diameter circle.
The hexie flowers on the pocket and pincushion ice 1/4" hexagons and fabric scraps.
The video over on Youtube will walk you through the steps as it is a full tutorial so please check it out.
  • First you need to layer the top fabric on top of the wadding and place them on the wrong side of the backing fabric. Pin.
  • Draw quilting lines and quilt by hand or machine.
  • Fold the raw edges over twice to encase them. Stitch them in place leaving one corner open.
  • Feed the elastic through the channel and adjust to fit the cutting board. When you have it at the desired size, tie together and finish encasing the raw edge.
  • Layer the pocket top fabric on top of the wadding and position them on top of the wrong side of the backing fabric.
  • Fold the edges over twice to encase and stitch down.
  • Make a 1/4" hexie flower and stitch in place on the pocket.
  • Sew the pocket onto your cover where you would like it.
  • Sew a 1/4" hexie flower to the centre of the 4" diameter circle of fabric.
  • Run a row of running stitches around the edge of the circle of fabric and gather up. Stuff with fibre stuffing.
  • Stitch in place with a ladder stitch.
